About Strasbourg
Strasbourg is the capital city of the Alsace region of France on the border with Germany’s Black Forest. The center of Strasbourg was built by the Romans and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strasbourg is known for its uniquely asymmetrical cathedral, its Christmas markets, and its picturesque “Petite France” neighborhood.
Strasbourg is built around two rivers, the Ill in France and the Rhine which it shares with Germany. There are numerous canals and waterways (apparently there are more canals here than in Amsterdam!), especially in Petite France.
Strasbourg has both French and German heritage and was passed between the two countries on numerous occasions, until it became French for good after World War II.
There are hundreds of great restaurants, bars, and cafes in Strasbourg, including several on the Michelin list! Regional specialties include tarte flambée, choucroute, pot au feu, bretzels (aka pretzels), and of course wine and beer produced in Alsace!
There is great hiking and walking trails around Strasbourg in the Vosges mountains or in the Black Forest of Germany. Day trips from Strasbourg include Basel, Switzerland, Fribourg, Heidelberg, and Baden-Baden in Germany, and many small towns along the Alsace Wine Route in France. Further destinations that are easily accessible by train include Paris, Reims, Dijon, Berlin, Zurich, and Brussels.
We love Strasbourg and believe there is something for everyone here. We hope you will visit us!
